This is an indulgent time of year. We want to enjoy, partake, and have fun. (Yay fun!)
Unfortunately, many of us struggle during the holidays with maintaining “self-control” and trying to “be good” but when we “give in” and indulge we often end up feeling crappy, shameful, or guilty.
I believe that the stress of depriving yourself, and the internal struggle of trying to “be good” can actually be more harmful and stressful than if you just did what you wanted with mindfulness, and then let it go.
Introducing Mindful Indulgence.
Mindful indulgence is about setting an intention that you are going to be mindful of your choices, and your decisions will be based on how you ultimately want to feel. Mindful indulgence fosters a conscious connection to what you indulge in so that your choices align with your goals.
4 steps to help you to indulge mindfully.
1. Acknowledge a desire as it comes up. Accept it and observe without judgment.
2. Mindfully evaluate whether this is something truly harmful, or rebellious or no big deal.
3. Check in with yourself. Can you mindfully indulge and still feel good about yourself?
4. Go for it. Indulge and savor the experience (letting go of struggle, judgment and guilt) or, don’t do it at all.
The non-judgmental aspect of mindfulness makes you more accepting, so instead of feeling bad about giving into a desire, you experience less guilt or regret from that decision and are much less likely to beat yourself up about it afterward.
The holidays are a time for celebration, and indulging is a natural part of the experience. By relishing your indulgences without guilt, you are nurturing a positive and harmonious relationship with yourself.
